Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso’s fight against crime is showing initial signs of success, as preliminary referendum results and the arrest of a significant gang member give a boost to his efforts.
The referendum was called by Lasso with the intention of toughening penalties for drug trafficking, murder and minor offenses, increasing the presence and resources of security forces, and setting up special jails for notorious criminals. Early indications suggest that Ecuadorians have generally supported the measures, offering a critical endorsement to the President’s crime
