At least 56 people have been killed and dozens more injured after two separate suicide bombings in Pakistan on Friday.
The first attack occurred at a religious gathering in the Kurram tribal district of the country’s northwest, close to the Afghan border. At least 36 deaths were reported, with more than 50 injured.
The second attack happened later in the same day at a similar religious gathering in the city of Quetta, in Balochistan province. At least 20 people were killed and more than 20 injured in that attack.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for either bombing. However, the Islamic State (IS) group has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks in the country in the past.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan condemned the attacks, saying in a statement: “I am deeply saddened by the terrorist attacks on two different gatherings in Kurram & Quetta today. Our country shall never be terrorized by such cowardly acts of terror. We shall protect our people.”
